Organic Vegetable Gardening Class

Are you thinking about growing some of your own food this summer?
Lapeer County MSU Extension is pleased to announce that we are holding an organic vegetable gardening class May 10, 2008, 10 am to 1 pm. Jeff Ball, the featured speaker, is the author of numerous gardening books and a garden columnist for the Detroit News. Kim Willis, home horticulturist for the Lapeer County MSU Extension and a garden writer, will also be speaking.

The organic vegetable gardening class will cover soil, compost, methods of gardening, and vegetable varieties for home gardeners. The class is being held at the Annex Building meeting room, 287 W. Nepessing, Lapeer. Cost of the class is $15.00. Pre-registration is required. For a registration form or more information please call 810-667-0344.

National Letter Carrier association in partnership
with the United States Postal Service will hold their annual Food Drive
to Stamp Out Hunger. The food drive will be nationwide. Customers can
leave food by their mailboxes for pick up by their carriers. Any
business customers that want to donate food can make arrangements with
the Postal Service to have it picked up. Food will go to the local food
bank to support the community.

Does your child like gardening and nature activities? The Lapeer County Master Gardener program is happy to announce that the children’s garden program will begin May 14th. All children 8-10 years old are invited to attend. The program will run for 5 weeks and children will learn about growing flowers and vegetables, attracting wildlife to the garden such as butterflies, and discovering good bugs and bad bugs.

Classes will be held at the Lapeer County MSUE office from 6 pm to 8:30 pm one day a week beginning with the May 14th class. Students may sign up for one class or all of them. Each class will cost only $5.00. Students must pre-register and space is limited. Lapeer County Michigan State University Extension is offering “ServSafe Training.” The ServSafe program was developed by the National Restaurant Association. Classes will be offered for Manager Certification on May 15 and 22 from
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The cost for managers is $200.00. Upon successful completion of an exam, managers will receive a certificate verifying they are a certified ServSafe Food Protection Manager. Participants must attend both sessions.
The classes cover: control time and temperature when handling food, ensuring proper personal hygiene, preventing cross contamination, proper cleaning and sanitizing.
For information and registration call 810-667-0341. Space is still available. Classes will be held at the Lapeer County MSU Extension office, downtown Lapeer, 287 W Nepessing, Lapeer.

High School Art at Gallery 194
Meet the High School student artists Friday, May 16th from 5-7pm at Gallery 194 in downtown Lapeer! Artists from Lapeer East, Lapeer West, Lapeer Community High School, Dryden High School, Imlay City High School and select home schools will exhibit their artwork in the main gallery from May 14 - May 24. Gallery 194 is open from
11 am - 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday. The reception is FREE and open to the public. Singer songwriter, Jamie Marvin, will provide music with her acoustic guitar in hand. Students will be on hand with their art teachers, families, friends and the
public at large to view artwork and enjoy their creative expressions.
